Bologna’s Summer Musical Extravaganza: A Bernstein School Showcase

From May to July 2018, the Bernstein School of Musical Theater (BSMT) presents a vibrant summer festival of musical productions, a collaborative effort with the Teatro Comunale and Teatro Duse in Bologna. This annual event, a cornerstone of Bologna’s summer calendar, features three renowned titles: *West Side Story*, *The Witches of Eastwick*, and *Big Fish*. The festival provides invaluable performance opportunities for the Academy’s talented students, showcasing their abilities to both enthusiastic audiences and industry professionals. This year marks a significant milestone; the high caliber of the BSMT’s work has led to *West Side Story* being included in the Teatro Comunale’s subscription series for the first time. The enduring partnership with the Teatro Comunale, alongside the collaboration with the Teatro Duse (hosting the remaining two productions), is further strengthened by the support of the Municipality of Bologna. This festival caps off a remarkable year for the school, following the inauguration of its expanded facilities, enabling new community initiatives and deeper engagement with the Borgo Panigale – Reno district, a vibrant area undergoing cultural revitalization. *West Side Story*, directed by Gianni Marras, with musical direction by Timothy Brock, vocal direction and artistic direction by Shawna Farrell, and choreography by Gillian Bruce, takes the stage at the Teatro Comunale from July 11th to 17th. This iconic Bernstein piece—especially meaningful for BSMT, having staged a reduced version 25 years ago to mark the school’s first year—is a fitting tribute during the composer’s centennial celebration. This production also celebrates the Academy’s ten-year collaboration with the Teatro Comunale, incorporating the Comunale’s orchestra professors and over 50 performers. *The Witches of Eastwick*, adapted from the popular 1987 film starring Jack Nicholson, will be presented at the Teatro Duse on May 4th and 5th. Directed by Mauro Simone, with choreography by Gillian Bruce and musical direction by Shawna Farrell, this production, originally a London hit in 2000, promises to enchant audiences. Finally, *Big Fish*, directed by Saverio Marconi (a long-time BSMT collaborator and instructor), with musical direction by Shawna Farrell and choreography by Nadia Scherani, completes the trilogy at the Teatro Duse on June 7th and 8th. Based on the beloved 2003 Tim Burton film and subsequently adapted for the Broadway stage, this theatrical experience will feature approximately 50 performers from the BSMT’s second and third academic years. Tickets can be purchased online or at the theaters’ box offices.
