The Nobel laureate and iconic American singer-songwriter, Bob Dylan, renowned for his pivotal role in the folk music revival, is releasing a new book in November 2022. Published by Feltrinelli Editore in Italy and Simon & Schuster internationally, “Philosophy of Modern Song” offers a profound and multifaceted exploration of popular music. This insightful work showcases Dylan’s deep appreciation for songwriting, encompassing both the artists and the enduring significance of their creations. The collection delves into over sixty songs spanning the 1950s to the 1970s, the golden age of rock, pop, soul, and country, including Italian classics such as “Nel blu dipinto di blu” and “Volare.” Simon & Schuster CEO Jonathan Karp revealed the impressive song list, featuring American legends like Jimmy Reed, Ray Charles, Willie Nelson, Little Richard, and Townes Van Zandt, as well as tracks by Cher, the Eagles, the Fugs, and Rosemary Clooney. The selection also stretches back to Stephen Foster’s 1849 composition, “Rudy Was a Lady,” and includes early 20th-century works like “The Whiffenpoof Song.” This volume, begun in 2010, reflects Dylan’s decades of immersion in the craft of songwriting, culminating in sixty-plus essays that blend insightful prose with musical reflections. As with Dylan’s previous works, this book presents a contemplative exploration of the human condition. Translated by Alessandro Carrera, “Philosophy of Modern Song” is enhanced by 150 photographs and dreamlike lyrical interludes, creating a visually stunning and artistically rich experience. The book follows the release of Dylan’s 2020 album, “Rough and Rowdy Ways,” adding to his legacy of over 125 million records sold, solidifying his position as a globally influential figure since his rise to fame as a leading folk artist in the early 1960s.
